‘Our Seams’ grew from questions stemming from my own experiences at the intersection of transnationalism, queerness, and style. Choices in dress can be a radical act. Tension arises between contemporary and conventional. How can we celebrate our backgrounds in a way that feels true to who we are today? How do modern pressures and historical expectations impact our personal style choices?
In this work I paired bold displays of color with each subject’s garments to convey both brilliance and distinction. I hand painted each canvas backdrop with the aim of maintaining the textures and imperfections of the paints and canvas. The subjects are photographed in a simple, yet honest way to uphold their authenticity of the subject while drawing attention to their outfit.
‘Our Seams’ invites appreciation of both the traditional and contemporary; honoring the multifaceted parts of our present-day selves, beautifully displaying where we came from and where we’re going. In this we welcome style and fashion as contributions to cultural preservation, as well as a continued evolution of the conversation.
OUR SEAMS WAS EXHIBITED AT PUBLIC FUNCTIONARY IN MINNEAPOLIS FROM APRIL 22 - MAY 5, 2023.
