We as humans need to be seen, heard, and loved. We seek connection with those who promise to do such, but how do histories of power dynamics and injustice threaten such needs? And when the worst part of these injustices are exacerbated, we mourn for safety. How can the people committing to loving us reflect on their place and privilege in order to truly see and hear us?
In this film we see Micah & Shira, who met in New York right before the pandemic, bravely venture into a long distance relationship, Monet navigate her newfound queer identity with Amanda at her side, Lauren and Wylee, polyamorous friends and lovers, who were separated much of lockdown, and lastly Nadi and Cal, who learned the importance of teamwork and resiliency.
Gradual Ascent celebrates intimacy and connection within interracial, queer relationships.
The film, alongside photographs, were displayed at Augsburg Galleries in May 2022. The film was shown at Sound Unseen Festival, and in indie festivals in China, Peru, and New Zealand.
